Find me at the Barra Strait Mi'kmaq Friendship Festival - Mawio’mi Tewitk!

The Barra Strait Mi'kmaq Friendship Festival - Mawio’mi Tewitk launches its first year at the Grand Narrows Waterfront, bringing together Mi’kmaq and non-Mi’kmaq communities in a vibrant celebration of friendship, culture, and connection.

Highlights of the day include:

- Welcoming/blessing ceremony led by Mary Louise Bernard

- Talk on Mi’kmaq–Gaelic connections by John Sylliboy, L’nu Interpretative Lead at the Highland Village

- Unveiling of a student mural from Rankin School of the Narrows

- Live music from The Hi-Boys and The Blue Moose Band

- Friendship Market with Indigenous and local vendors, artisans, and community resources

- Plus more programming to come!

Our Vision:

This new event is the first step in what we hope will grow into an annual tradition that creates more opportunities for Mi’kmaq and non-Mi’kmaq communities to come together, share traditions, learn from each other, and celebrate the things we have in common while honoring what makes each of us unique!

I'm so looking forward to sharing an array of cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial supplies ✨

We are so grateful to be based in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, covered by the Peace and Friendship Treaties, on which we reside. In honour of this land and its people, we wholeheartedly embrace our responsibility to re-Indigenize and decolonize the institutions and spaces we share and everyday strive to walk in right relation with all of our relatives.
